Ending a search for—according to the search committee's criteria—a person possessing “intellectual honesty, leadership, tolerance, savoir-faire, sympathetic understanding of youth, vision and a sense of humor,” the trustees of Wellesley College announced that Mildred McAfee ’20 would succeed Ellen Fitz Pendleton as president of the college.  McAfee served as executive secretary of the Associate Alumnae of Vassar College between 1932 and 1934, and in 1942 she interrupted her presidency of Wellesley to direct the WAVES—becoming by virtue of her initial rank, Lieutenant Commander, the first woman commissioned officer in the United States Navy.
