Art and architectural historian Jay E. Cantor lectured on "Corcoran, Vassar and the Second Empire Style in America." The original Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC (1861) and Vassar’s Main Building (1865)—both exemplary of the Second Empire style in American architecture—were designed by James Renwick, Jr., who modeled them after the Louvre’s 19th century Tuileries addition in Paris.
