About 70 students took over the office of the dean of the faculty in Main Building to protest the college’s decision not to renew the contracts of six teachers, on the grounds of insufficient scholarly accomplishment. The students presented three additional demands focusing on hiring and tenure procedures.
President Simpson, along with several other members of the faculty, spoke earlier to approximately 350 students explaining faculty contract renewal and tenure policies, and the faculty, after an emergency meeting, asked the students to vacate the dean’s office.
The students refused to leave and some 150 other students gathered in Main Circle to protest the dismissals. The decisions were not reversed, and the sit-in ended after two weeks, on May 5th.
